Paul Newman handles his role as Costner's ex-drunk father with the relaxed confidence of shooting free throws in your driveway. We're given just enough peek into the unfolding world of a couple discovering love, without it feeling like an intrusion. Both Garrett and Theresa seem to struggle at conversation, both uncertain of how to discover each other, yet each finding an attraction they can't seem to deny. Regardless of the decor, it was a charming little beach cottage with great bones and was right on the ocean. There are a couple of things you can look forward to in most Nicholas Sparks movies—great sets like the inn on the beach from , and a tearful ending. The family who owns it was renting it out for the summer and we signed up for a week. I wanted them to look like I had just slipped them off and sat down. I guess I really never noticed the clutter. But the heroine meets the author of the letter - Garrett, inconsolable widower who is going to go on a voyage to relax and unwind. And I suspect that is exactly what happened.
Definitely one of the most enjoyable movies I have seen. She meets his father Newman , and then the man himself, a shipwright who hand-crafts beautiful vessels. Neither is sure they can be open to a new relationship, nor are they ready to say goodbye to something that is starting to feel so right. The man believes it's behind him; the woman hopes it's ahead of her. This movie could have taken the easy way out, with a neatly tied together ending, everyone living happily ever after. That sentence alone will probably steer you towards or away from this movie.
